Scripture does say that the stars are
placed in the heavens for signs and clearly there will be signs in the heavens
in the coming days. There will be the 'cosmic signs' when Christ returns (the
sun and moon and stars darkened) and the 'sign' of the Son of man.
Rev. 12 describes a great sign in the heavens, a 'woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head' which occurs
every fall with the sign Bethulah or Virgo.
Also mentioned in Rev. 12 is the sign in the heaven of the 'dragon' which is
later cast down to earth by Michael. This sign also is reproduced in the
constellation of Draco, the dragon, as the constellation gradually descends
below the horizon over several days during the fall season, giving the
appearance of the 'dragon' being cast down to the earth.
So we should expect signs in the heavens, likely as heralds or confirmation of
events God has already announced in scripture that He will do during this time.
So this comet McNaught would appear to possibly be some type of sign. It is
being described as the brightest comet in the past 30 years and it may possibly
be the brightest in all recorded history. A bright comet coming at this
particular time is intriguing in what it might signify, considering the events
in Israel and the EU.
One might derive some possible message from this comet by the constellations
through which it passes. The constellations, created by God, are believed by
many to have been designed to portray the message of God's redemption, through
the 'signs' they represent. Over the years the original meaning of the
constellation signs have been distorted by the pagans, but some of their
original meanings can be derived by their names and perhaps by certain
scriptures that may give some reference to what a particular constellation
represents.
One such constellation is that of Sagittarius, the archer. Sagittarius is
pictured in pagan signs as a half-man, half horse figure with a bow. It is
believed the original representation of the constellation of Sagittarius was
that of a man riding a horse and carrying a bow. The description and location of
Sagittarius is more completely described in the
July 2006
newsletter of Biblical astronomy.
This has led some to associate the constellation Sagittarius with the passage of
Rev. 6 and the opening of the first seal- 'I looked, and there before me was a
white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as
a conqueror bent on conquest.'
This association with the constellation Sagittarius and the rider of the first
seal was made by Bullinger in his book 'The
witness of the stars', which was published in 1890's, I believe. And
Sagittarius is pictured as described in Rev. on a horse, with a bow and a crown
(which has fallen- pictured as another smaller constellation).
And the comet McNaught, at it's brightest point (that we know of so far), was in
the constellation of Sagittarius at that time. This could suggest that the comet
was pointing to the archer, the horse and rider of the first seal, as it was at
it's brightest during this time. This could be a significant sign. The path of
the comet and it's passage through Sagittarius is more completely described in
the Dec. 2006 newsletter of Biblical astronomy.
There has been some question as to who or what the 1st seal refers to. Some
believe the rider is Jesus, as Jesus is pictured as riding a white horse at His
return armageddon. But as the 1st seal is pictured at the beginning of events
and Jesus does not begin to 'ride' until the end of events, this would appear
unlikely.
Others believe the 1st seal refers to the spirit of conquest, which would not
appear to be consistent with the rest of the seals which appear to be actual
events or persons, not 'spirits of' famine or persecution.
Many believe the 1st seal refers to the beast, the little horn, the AC. This
would appear to make the most sense of the pictured individual as the beast does
'conquer' the whole world during the latter half of the 70th week.
Could this comet, at this time suggest that the first seal is about to be
opened? Could it be that the beast is about to begin his ride? Considering the
negotiations between the EU and Israel, the Madrid conference, etc., it is
possible that some 'covenant' has been or will be confirmed in the near future.
It is also possible that this sign could signify the beginning of conquest by
the individual identified as the rider.
This comet at this time, shining it's brightest in the constellation of
Sagittarius, could suggest that we have witnessed or will soon witness a
significant event. This event could signal the rise to power, the beginning of
the ride, of one who will eventually be called the little horn.
The reality could be that many will see the event and not realize it's
significance. And it is possible that the event could occur in secret, it may be
concealed so that few know that it has taken place. Hence the need for a 'sign'.
The appearance of the comet in Sagittarius alone is not enough to suggest that
this is indeed a 'great sign', but the uniqueness of this comet, coming at this
time with the current world situation, would suggest that events need to be
watched closely. It is possible that we are indeed about to enter the 70th week
and the seals are about to be broken.
And there may be something more to this comet, an additional sign, something
unexpected.
This comet has been seen in the northern hemisphere for the past week and will
now been seen in the southern hemisphere for the next week, it will have been
seen worldwide. It is also coming quite close to the sun and it's tail is
separating into 2 parts, the ion tail and the dust tail. It is also possible
that the comet could fragment into 2 or more parts as it comes close to the sun
and the ice melts.
From the pictures taken of the comet in the twilight sky, and sometimes
daylight, it appears as an orange or white object approaching the horizon. In
many pictures it appears as a 'fireball' heading toward the earth. As the night
approaches the comet descends below the horizon and gives the appearance of
hitting the earth.
In this way the comet is like the constellation Draco, the dragon cast down to
earth. As the constellation or the comet approaches and passes the horizon it
appears to impact or be 'cast down' to earth.
In the case of the comet it could give the appearance of a fireball or fiery
object (with it's split tail), or perhaps multiple fiery objects if it
fragments, being cast down to earth, or hitting the earth.
This also would appear to parallel a certain passage of prophetic scripture,
Rev. 8:5 - 'Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,
and hurled it on the earth.' This is described as an event that occurs just
prior to the sounding of the 1st trumpet during the time of silence.
And it just so happens that as the comet proceeds along it's present course
southward, as it passes from Sagittarius, it will run parallel to the
constellation Ara, the constellation known as the 'altar'.
Ara, the altar, is pictured upside down with it's flames pointing toward the
earth. The constellation is just south and to the right of Sagittarius. While
the comet will not 'pass through' the constellation of the altar, it will run
parallel to it, and the comet will remain close to the horizon for the next few
days. The comet may then have the appearance of coming from the 'upside-down'
altar and then hitting the earth, as it descends below the horizon. A more
complete description and location of Ara can be found in the
November
2006 newsletter of Biblical astronomy.
The comet McNaught, as it is seen in the southern hemisphere, may parallel the
description given in Rev. 8, of fire from the altar being hurled upon the earth.
This also would appear to be a significant sign.
As the comet passes through the northern hemisphere perspective, it is at its
brightest while passing through Sagittarius. As the comet passes through the
southern hemisphere perspective and gradually decreases in brightness, it passes
parallel to the constellation Ara, and it may appear to be coming from the altar
and then being 'hurled' on the earth as it passes into the horizon.
If this were true it could also be of significant help in the interpretation of
scripture. There are currently 2 main opinions on the timing of the 'seals,
trumpets and bowls' of Rev. Many believe these events run in sequence, one after
the other, the trumpets follow the seals and the bowls follow the trumpets.
Others believe that the seals, trumpets and bowls run concurrently, they run in
parallel, the seals occurring during the same time that the trumpets take place.
It would appear that if the comet McNaught in Sagittarius is a sign of the 1st
seal, and if the comet also appears to be a sign of fire coming from the altar,
an event that immediately precedes the trumpets, then the 2 events would be
shown as occurring together. This could suggest that the seals and trumpets may
be occurring in parallel, they may occur during the same period of time. The
first seal would be described in conjunction with the time preceding the
sounding of the trumpets, the time of silence.
Phillip: My position on
the
seals, trumpets, and bowls differs from this
opinion.
I would suggest this as a possible
interpretation of these 'signs'. Whether there is real significance to these
signs or not would not be known immediately in any case. We may not know for
sure if these were indeed real signs until the next event occurs.
And the 2nd seal and the first trumpet both appear to agree on what the next
event could be. It would appear to be war, as described in the 2nd seal, the
rider who takes peace from the earth and causes men to slaughter each other. And
as the 1st trumpet appears to give a description similar to the judgment poured
out by God at Gog-Magog, the type of war may also be indicated. The current
world situation would suggest that the battle of Gog-Magog may not be far off.
If a war such as
Gog-Magog
does occur in the near future, I believe that would be confirmation that this
comet was indeed a great sign in the heavens. This comet could be then seen as a
herald of what was to come, perhaps a short time of peace, followed by war. And
during this time heaven would be silent, until God breaks His silence and
delivers Israel-' O God, do not keep silent; be not quiet, O God...Come, they
say, let us destroy them as a nation...' Ps. 83.
And there likely will be more signs in the heavens as the 70th week progresses.
I find it interesting that there are features of certain constellations that
appear to be consistent with certain descriptions given of the seals in Rev.
Perseus, the 'breaker', carries a large sword and could reflect the 2nd seal.
Orion also carries a sword and apparently Jewish tradition has it that when a
comet is seen in Orion it will be the end of the world. The planet Mars also
could have some association with war.
Libra contains the scales, which would be consistent with the 3rd seal. Sirius,
the dog constellation, appears to have some association with plague and death.
Crater, the cup constellation, would appear to have some association with wrath
poured out, such as that of the 6th seal.
I believe that God will have many 'signs in the heavens' during the coming days.
It might be a good idea to research astronomy from a Biblical perspective to
enable us to understand exactly what message a particular sign may be conveying
that is consistent with scripture. The signs in the heavens are not useful for
predicting the future, rather they are only useful for confirming what scripture
already says. But they may confirm what we already suspect, that the time is at
hand.
Other comments:
Peanutsrnuts: When I first read of Bullinger's description of
Ophiuchus, I always thought it was an apt description of Moses. My early
research indicates that this constellation was also known as being as a kind
of "healing" constellation.
Like the author at this web site says, (See:
http://www.biblicalastronomy.com/astronomy1.htm)
It does sort of remind you of...
Malachi
4:2
But for you who revere my name, the sun of
righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and
leap like calves released from the stall. Then you will trample down the
wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I do
these things, says the LORD Almighty.
This week I noticed that this week's
Torah portion returns to Exodus 1 through to 6 and so it contains the portion
about Moses grabbing the tail of the serpent.
Exodus
4:2-4
But the LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand and grasp it by
its tail" so he stretched out his hand and caught it and it became a staff
in his hand---that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers,
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to
you.
I found it curious that the author of
the above web site reports that on Dec. 10th the Comet was located in the tail
of the serpent which Ophiuchus was holding! Don't really know what it all
means, yet, but I am watching the signs....
By the way, I also noticed that this Exodus scripture says that the people
will not believe this sign of the staff turning into a serpent (My NASV Bible
says it this way "heed the witness of the first sign.") The Scriptures also
says that the people won't believe the second sign of leprosy being healed.
Finally, we do see that the people do believe the third sign, where the water
of the Nile turns into blood.
Exodus 4:8-9 Is this telling us there are three particular celestial
events to watch for? Don't know but I for one am watching.....
Earalav: Today is the 12th...the day the comet is to be the brightest.
It is also the last day of the Madrid+15 conference. This morning in our
devotional time with my daughters we "happened" to be reading Daniel 9. It
occurred to me that today we were reading the very passage that "could" be
fulfilled today.
Daniel 9:27
Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;...
Does it strike anyone else that the
comet's name, McNaught, translates as Son of Nothing?
