Seattle/Tacoma 2.1 Earthquake today - USGS reported a 2.1 magnitude earthquake in the Seattle/Tacoma Urban area at a depth of 26 miles. Nobody probably felt it, but it was an earthquake nonetheless.

• From US President to Ruler of Planet Earth? (May 11, 2005) - You know it's getting bad when even World Net Daily questions who President Bush's god is. Raiders News Update was inundated yesterday after running a portion of WorldNetDaily Christian Libertarian commentator Vox Day's opinion piece on President Bush--The Devil's own? As much as calling Bush an antichrist, Vox recalled biblical warnings of the end times false prophets.

• U.S. Warns Citizens on Indonesia Travel (May 11, 2005) - The U.S. State Department Tuesday urged U.S. citizens to defer all non-essential travel to Indonesia. It urged those who choose to travel to the country to be vigilant and "remain aware of the continued potential for terrorist attacks against Americans, U.S. or other Western interests in Indonesia."

• U.S. Pays For Care of Illegal Aliens (May 6, 2005) - The Bush administration said yesterday that it would start paying hospitals and doctors for providing emergency care to illegal immigrants. The money, totaling $1 billion, will be available for services provided from today through September 2008. Congress provided the money as part of the 2003 law that expanded Medicare to cover prescription drugs, but the new payments have nothing to do with the Medicare program. (There are a bunch more stories about the illegal immigration problem that everyone seems to be ignoring along with the RealID issue resulting from terrorism and illegal immigration. In my opinion it is one of the building blocks for public acceptance of eventually ID tagging people as government policy "for our safety.")

• Papers, Please! National ID Legislation Passes - Tuesday May 10th 2005 is the day that future historians will note as The Day America Changed. On this date, the Senate of the United States of America passed legislation that will bring about a national ID card. President G. W. Bush is expected to sign the bill on May 12th 2005. The national ID card scheme will take three years to implement. (I seem to recall hearing the phrase "Papers, please" in many WWII movies as POWs tried to escape German captivity, or when the Jews were being robbed and murdered all over Europe. I guess that was just in the movies huh? Does this concept sound familiar?)
• Christians Urged to Adapt to Fluid World (May 11, 2005) - Christian churches must set aside differences and adopt less confrontational approaches toward other faiths in an age of mobile populations and strains between the West and the Islamic world, the head of the Greek Orthodox Church told a global religious conference Tuesday. The Rev. Samuel Kobia encouraged churches to seek new ideas to make Christianity relevant to cultures unfamiliar with European traditions and to avoid the "insensitive" methods that undermine local languages and customs. "Christianity's center of gravity ... continues to migrate southward," said Kobia, a Kenyan. "Our vision must undergo a corresponding conversion." He added: "As we seek to overcome tensions between North and South, we must also be converted to a new sense of unity joining East and West," Kobia said. He urged for a "major step forward" in Christian-Islamic contacts during a WCC interfaith gathering in June at the group's headquarters in Geneva.
• Israeli PM Confirms Pullout Delay (May 11, 2005) - The withdrawal will not now take place until the middle of August, to avoid clashing with the traditional Jewish mourning period of Tisha Be Av. The original date for starting the removal had been 25 July. Mr. Sharon plans to evacuate all 21 Jewish settlements in Gaza, but will maintain control over the territory. "The evacuation will be carried out... immediately after the day of Tisha Be Av - on 15, 17 or 16 [August]. I don't want to commit myself to an exact date," Mr. Sharon said in an Israeli TV interview.
