• When God Seems Distant by Chip Ingram - What do you do when God seems far, far away? When you open your Bible and it looks like black ink on white paper but doesn’t say or mean anything to you? When you close your eyes to pray but you can’t concentrate for more than two or three seconds and you feel like you’re simply wasting your time? What do you do ? How do you reconnect that intimacy with God? I think we all have times like that. We may not admit it very often, but we all have times of spiritual dryness or a lack of connection with the Lord Jesus. Sometimes it’s a gradual sin that’s made its way into our hearts or life that puts up a barrier between us and the Lord; or sometimes it’s just a matter of fatigue and emotions getting tangled that make us feel far away from God even though we may not be. I think one of the great dangers in our relationship with Jesus is basing things on emotions. I want wonderful and great emotions as much or more than anyone. But I’ve learned that I can’t base the reality of my relationship with Christ on what my emotions tell me anymore than I can base the love I have for my wife on my emotions. There’s times I feel over-the-top, absolutely excited, and passionately crazy about my wife; but there’s other times when I’m tired, fatigued, out of sorts, and sick; at these times I know that I love her, but don’t feel much of anything. I think it’s important to remember what real love is and also not measure our spiritual intimacy simply by our emotions. With that said, however, I think there are times when we move away from God so gradually and have times of dryness and don’t know how to get reconnected to the Lord. Let me suggest a couple things that I have been very helpful for me: Realize that the organ of intimacy with God is not knowledge, not ritual, it’s not trying harder, it’s obedience. Jesus said in John 14:21, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." What I’ve learned is I must obey my way into intimacy with God. Notice what it says above: he that loves Me will keep My commandments and then we receive the promise—Jesus and the Father will come and make themselves known and be real to us in response to our obedience. So when I get really bummed out and feel distant from God, sometimes I just open my Bible and say to the Lord, “I don’t feel much right now, but whatever I read I’m going to figure out some specific thing to do to obey You. It might be writing a note, doing a good deed, making a phone call, or walking out the door and asking God for someone specific to go and help. But I’m just going to “flat out obey anything that is remotely in that passage” to get my spiritual engine running again and refocused in the right direction. I’m not saying it’s a magic bullet, but I will say when I start focusing on application and obeying, the intimacy and the accompanying emotions are often not far away. more...

• Envoys from Mideast Quartet to meet in Jerusalem on Tuesday Haaretz (June 22, 2007) - Envoys from the Quartet of Middle East peace brokers are to meet in Jerusalem on Tuesday, a day after Olmert and Abbas are due to attend a summit in Egypt. Miri Eisin, a spokeswoman for Olmert, said "low-level officials" from the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia would meet. Sources in Jerusalem said the attendees would be special envoys rather than ministers. Olmert is set to announce the release of frozen Palestinian tax funds as part of a "package of gestures" in the regional summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, diplomats and Israeli officials said Friday. Sergei Yakovlev, a Russian Foreign Ministry envoy for Middle East peacemaking, said the envoys "will discuss the situation in the region, the talks for the Quartet and plans of action for the future," Russia's Interfax news agency reported. A higher-level meeting of officials from the Quartet - the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations - was to have taken place Monday in Egypt. But that session was delayed to allow Quartet officials time to assess changes in the region after Hamas' violent takeover of the Gaza Strip last week. There has been no official announcement from the Quartet of the planned meeting, but in Moscow, a Russian envoy said the meeting would take place. Yakovlev said the envoys will discuss the situation in the region, the talks for the Quartet and plans of action for the future, Interax reported. • Farouk al-Shara strongly supports Syria's ties with Iran Islamic Republic News Agency (June 22, 2007) - Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Shara here on Thursday strongly supports his country's ties with Tehran and underlined that it would be to the benefit of Arab countries. The Syrian official made the remarks in a press conference with domestic and foreign reporters in Damascus. "If Iran had remained under reign of its formal monarchical regime, the Zionist regime would have occupied the whole region," he said. "We always find friends for ourselves prior to any confrontation with the Zionist regime," he said. Relations between Iran and Syria in the past or at present have always safeguarded the interests of Arab states and Iran, he pointed out. Syria seeks to meet the interests of Persian Gulf littoral states by consolidating its ties with Tehran, he said, adding that "We have always tried to boost relations between Iran and these Arab countries." • EU Leaders Agree On Foreign Chief Reuters (June 22, 2007) - European Union leaders reached broad agreement on Friday on a single post to run EU foreign affairs, the first success at a summit on the bloc's future, but Poland held up progress towards a treaty to reform the Union. The leaders of the 27 member states agreed on the job title, role and powers of a High Representative of the European Union for foreign policy, defense and security, diplomats said. The post will combine the jobs of foreign policy chief Javier Solana, who does mostly crisis management, and External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, who controls the executive European Commission's aid budget. The new foreign policy chief would chair meetings of EU foreign ministers and head a combined external action service drawing on both national and EU diplomats, after Britain dropped its reservations on those points, the diplomats said. The provisional accord was reached on the second day of a crucial summit meant to launch negotiations on a treaty to reform the bloc's institutions, replacing the defunct EU constitution and helping the bloc face up to global challenges. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, hosting the summit, struggled to break Poland's resistance to planned changes to the bloc's voting system which Warsaw says would favor member states with larger populations and reduce its own influence. Merkel met Polish President Lech Kaczynski three times in 12 hours to try to ease his concerns. "We're working hard. The problems are not yet solved but everyone is trying," said Merkel, who also met the leaders of the other states with concerns over the treaty -- Britain, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. • Envoy: Iran open to nuclear compromise Reuters (June 22, 2007) - Iran is ready to provide answers on past suspicious nuclear activities to the International Atomic Energy Agency within the next few months, the agency's head said Friday after meeting with the country's top nuclear negotiator. But the Iranian official suggested the offer was conditional to an end of U.N. Security Council involvement in Iran's nuclear program. The council has already imposed two sets of sanctions on the Islamic republic over the past half year for its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment and is poised to impose new penalties. Such terms would likely be unacceptable to the five permanent council members plus Germany — the six powers that have spearheaded the effort to pressure Iran to give up its enrichment ambitions. The Security Council has demanded that Iran provide answers to the IAEA, the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog, on activities that could be linked to a weapons program. But it has also called on Iran to freeze enrichment and stop building a heavy water reactor that will produce plutonium — like enriched uranium a material that could provide the fissile core of nuclear warheads. Sounds like they're biding their time... but what could they be planning? I think Israel may catch wind of their plans soon through Syria, prompting the destruction of Damascus placing the hooks in the jaws of Iran, Russia, and Turkey. We shall see soon enough. Events cannot keep snowballing without some kind of release and war is the word whispered throughout the Middle East. • Polish PM fears there may be no EU compromise Reuters (June 22, 2007) - Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said on Friday he feared there may be no compromise at a European Union summit on a treaty to reform the bloc's institutions. Speaking live on Polish television as his twin brother, President Lech Kaczynski, was presenting Warsaw's response to a German presidency compromise proposal in Brussels, he said: "We have hit a wall." "The lack of any willingness to back down is very clear on the side of our partners and I am afraid there may be no way out...I am very sorry about that," he said. Poland was and still is ready to compromise but "one cannot give way all the time," he added. A senior aide to the prime minister was quoted as saying Poland could not accept the compromise on the voting system that was on the table but he did not exclude further negotiation. "The Polish side cannot accept the proposals, what is now on the negotiating table," Andrzej Sados, a minister in the prime minister's office, told the PAP news agency. The Polish president gave Poland's response in Brussels to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, chairing a summit of the 27-nation bloc already into its second day. • Sarkozy Could be Key Player at EU Summit Haaretz (June 21, 2007) - France's President Sarkozy heads to summit talks on Thursday, eager to overcome two years of crisis caused by a French rejection of a constitution for the bloc. He could prove a valuable ally to German Chancelor Merkel. Leaders of the European Union's 27 member states hope the two-day summit in Brussels will clear the way for a simplified treaty to replace the doomed constitution, blocked by French and Dutch referendums in 2005. It is Sarkozy's first European summit since he was elected president on May 6, promising a major diplomatic drive to break the EU's insitutional deadlock. Sarkozy told lawmakers from his right-wing ruling party Wednesday he was expecting "two very difficult days starting tomorrow, since what is at stake is nothing less than pulling Europe out of immobility." For the past month, Sarkozy has been engaged in telephone diplomacy and meetings from Warsaw to Madrid to boost the chances of an agreement this week. He has also held consultations with French political leaders of all stripes -- including with far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, normally a pariah in French politics -- before heading to the negotiating table in Brussels. • Iran, Libya Adopt Close Stand On Regional, International Issues Islamic Republic News Agency (June 20, 2007) - First Vice President Parviz Davoudi said on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Libya have common and close view points on regional and international issues. Speaking to reporters, prior to seeing off ceremony for Libyan Prime Minister al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi, he said the two sides exchanged views on current developments in the Middle East region and the entire world. He said that Tehran and Tripoli could adopt closer stand in dealing with regional developments. Davoudi said the two sides also reviewed latest developments in Iraq and called for forging unity between Muslims and avoiding factional disputes between the Shia and Sunni Muslims. He said withdrawal of occupiers is the only solution to Iraq's problem, adding that Tehran and Tripoli support the Iraqi territorial integrity. Deeply rooted ties between Iran and Libya along with all-out cooperation would leave significant impacts on regional and international cooperation, he said. Describing the current visit of the Libyan delegation to Iran as fruitful, he said the two sides are determined to broaden all-out ties. Iran and Libya could have constructive cooperation in Latin America and African continent relying on their capabilities and potentialities, Davoudi said. The Libyan premier arrived in Tehran Tuesday night for a two-day visit to Iran. • EU leaders hold tense summit Associated Press (June 19, 2007) - Poland and Britain threatened Thursday to exercise their vetoes to prevent plans to draft a watered-down EU treaty at a European Union Summit, with Warsaw demanding more voting rights and London refusing to cede some powers to Brussels. British Prime Minister Tony Blair said he would reject any treaty that is similar to the draft constitution French and Dutch voters rejected two years ago. Blair, attending his last international summit before stepping down next week after a decade in power, was discussing Britain's demands for the treaty with his successor, Treasury chief Gordon Brown, before heading to the two-day summit. In Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said the plan proposed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the summit host, remains a problem. "The situation still does not satisfy us," Kaczynski told the Polish Rzeczpospolita daily as his twin brother, President Lech Kaczynski, headed to Brussels. "We should do everything to push through our proposal or to obtain some other solution that would equally satisfy our ambitions," the Polish prime minister said. "Either we obtain that, or there will be a veto." The EU is considering a voting system that takes into account each country's population. But Kaczynski has said Poland wants compensation for the deaths it suffered during World War II, when Nazi Germany invaded. He argues that his country would be a much larger country now if not for the war. Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker dismissed such demands as absurd. "I don't find it appropriate that some Poles think it would be necessary to restrict Germany," Juncker said. "I can only warn against such irrational comments." There Pastor served as Carter's 'point man' in getting the Senate to narrowly vote for the Carter-Torrijos Treaty on April 18, 1978, despite staunch objections from conservative politicians including Ronald Reagan." • Israel on the Brink, Again The Conservative Voice (June 19, 2007) - Last summer we saw a bungled war between Israel and Hezbollah that ended in a stalemate, which is not what Israel intended when it began. Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert sounded like he meant business when he declared that Hezbollah would be driven out of Lebanon. But Israel made the same mistake as we continue to make in Iraq. We are allowing too much concern for civilian casualties to interfere with winning the war. This is a mistake that neither Israel nor the US has learned to avoid, I'm sorry to say. To make things worse, Olmert gave the Gaza Strip to the Palestinians as a “peace offering.” He should have known better and we can only hope that he learned a lesson from it. Today, Gaza is now a threat to Israel’s very survival and any responsible leader should have seen this coming. Anything you give to Palestinians, they will take but instead of saying “thank you” they only demand more. Sound familiar? Things were kind of ok there for a while as long as President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party was holding the guns and could control the militias. But the rivalry between Abbas and the democratically elected representatives of Hamas continued to heat up ever since the election in January, 2006. Hamas is not a political party. It is a terrorist organization which pretended to be a political party for the election. But let’s make one thing clear. Fatah party members are just as responsible for terrorism on Israel as is Hamas, if not more. It’s hard to know which is worse, but Fatah is considered a little more moderate and willing to work for peace. Hamas, on the other hand, has but one goal - the obliteration of Israel. Neither one is a friend to the US or Israel. In Gaza, over the past couple of weeks, fighting between Fatah and Hamas militias has reached the boiling point. Fatah soldiers have been killed or driven out of Gaza, leaving the entire region in the hands of Hamas. During the takeover, stockpiles of American weapons supplied to Fatah were seized by Hamas as were critical CIA records covering CIA activities in the Middle East and tactics to defeat the radicals. This Friday, Abbas dissolved the Palestinian government, kicked Hamas out of Parliament, and appointed a new Prime Minister who is currently without a cabinet. Fatah is the old Yasir Arafat P.L.O. party. Now the western media is naively asking “How is Hamas going to govern in Gaza when they don’t have access to government money and resources?” Do they really think Hamas took Gaza so they could “govern” it? Hamas’s only concern for governing consists of giving free stuff to the poor, just like the American Democrat Party does, for the purpose of holding their support. They have renamed Gaza to “Hamasistan”. Hamas doesn’t care about Gaza but it does put them in a valuable strategic position to attack Israel from the south. I’m sure they won’t have any trouble getting money from Iran and Syria which is where they get their weapons, except of course, the ones they just got from America. The media is calling this a “civil war” but I think it’s much more than that, just as Iraq is much more than a civil war. Now that they have Gaza, Hamas intends to take the West Bank as well which, will put them within shooting range of Tel Aviv. The Bush Administration is sending reinforcements to Fatah troops in the West Bank which so far have been holding off Hamas fighters. The question to be asked is should the US be taking sides and sending more arms to either Palestinian side? Considering what happened with them in Gaza, I don’t think so. A second shipment is under consideration. A little further north, Syrian troops have been gathering on the border in the Golan Heights and conducting war games to pass the time while they wait - for what? Just to their west in Lebanon, Hezbollah has recovered from last year’s war. They have rebuilt their tunnels along the northern Israeli border and stocked them with from 20,000 to 25,000 Russian made Kasam, Katusha and “tank buster” rockets. And all of this was done right under the watchful eyes of the UN peacekeepers planted there last year for the expressed purpose of preventing it. • Constitutional fudge Guardian Unlimited (June 19, 2007) - So far, Britain's stance on the German attempt to revise the EU treaties has been - from a British perspective - broadly reasonable. The common position of 10 Downing St, the Foreign Office and the Treasury is that the new treaty must not transfer powers from member-states to the EU. So at the EU summit in Berlin this week, Britain will ask for the right to opt out of sensitive areas where national vetoes are likely to be scrapped, such as justice and home affairs, and social security. And a way will be found to ensure that the Charter of Fundamental Rights does not apply to Britain. But on one particular subject, the new provisions for foreign policy, British policy is shifting, and in ways that could harm both Britain and the EU. The most significant parts of the EU's constitutional treaty that are likely to be carried over to the new amending treaty concern foreign policy. The EU's current arrangements for representing its viewpoint to the rest of the world - when it has a single viewpoint - are dysfunctional. The rotating presidency shifts from one member-state to another every six months, at the cost of continuity and credibility with rest of the world. And the diplomatic side of foreign policy, under the High Representative (now Javier Solana) in the Council of Ministers, is separated from the economic side, under the commissioner for external relations (now Benita Ferrero-Waldner). Solana and Ferrero-Waldner run two bureaucracies that work on the same problems (such as the Middle East, the Balkans, Russia and energy) but do so separately, leading to different priorities and, too often, mixed messages to the outside world. Because the huge spending programmes of the Commission are seldom well-aligned with the EU's political objectives, as set by the Council, Europe's influence in the world is less than it could and should be. During the negotiation of the constitutional treaty, the British and their allies sought to fix these problems by creating a new "foreign minister", based on the jobs now held by Solana and Ferrero-Waldner. This person would chair meetings of the foreign ministers, replacing the rotating presidency. He or she would also speak for the EU externally, instead of the current "troika" of the foreign minister of the presidency, the High Representative and the external relations commissioner. The foreign minister would be supported by an "external action service", consisting of the relevant officials from the Council of Ministers and the Commission, and supplemented by others from the member-states. The job of this service would be to provide advice, analysis and expertise to the foreign minister. However, at a dinner of EU foreign ministers in Brussels this week, Margaret Beckett, the foreign secretary, unveiled a new British policy. The first point she made was expected, and not unreasonable: the title of "foreign minister" should be changed, since it could imply that the incumbent had authority over national foreign ministers. But she then said that this person should not chair the meetings of foreign ministers. She would restore this function, which includes the ability to set the agenda and sum up at the end, to the rotating presidency. This is bizarre: Britain has pioneered efforts to reduce the role of the rotating presidency - often in the face of tough opposition from smaller countries, which remain attached to the institution. I have even heard William Hague, never a great EU-enthusiast, say that the rotating presidency was a system that needed reform. The NATO secretary-general chairs meetings of NATO foreign and defence ministers, but does not have any power over them. NATO would be much less effective if the secretary-general was replaced by a rotating presidency. Beckett then went further, saying that the British could not accept the external action service. Apparently the creation of such a service could be portrayed as "state-building" - despite the fact that a merger of the departments working for Solana and Ferrero-Waldner would not give the EU new powers vis-à-vis the member-states. It does not make sense for Britain to support the foreign minister (or whatever that person is called) but not an external action service. It would be like having a conductor without an orchestra - or rather, a conductor trying to conduct two separate orchestras at the same time. Most of the smaller member-states initially opposed the plan for an external action service, because they understand that bigger countries tend to dominate EU foreign policy machinery. They have seen that happen within the small staff that works for Solana (where the three key officials are Pierre de Boissieu, the Frenchman who runs the Council of Ministers secretariat; Robert Cooper, the British head of the directorate for external relations; and Helga Schmid, the German head of the policy unit). Britain, alongside the other large member-states, would be well-placed to influence the external action service. • Only in the spirit can this be understood The Golden Report (June 19, 2007) - Many have asked why I’ve been silent for over a week about the insanity here in Israel.  I am still shaking my head in total unbelief.  Please keep in mind that what you are about to read is my very simplistic evaluation, knowing that there are many complications not mentioned here. First we pull out of Gaza under pressure from the Bush White House, knowing that it would become a terrorist stronghold.  I like most Israelis sat in total unbelief and watched Ariel Sharon who we all had trusted completely taken over by George W. Bush. We watched Sharon go against his country and even his own party and use words that no other Prime Minister ever used, like occupation, and a Palestinian State to mentions a couple. We watched Sharon bring Olmert from the 33rd position in the Likud Party all the way to the position of his number one in the Government. It seems now with 20/20 hind sight that is how far back Sharon had to reach into the Likud ranks to find someone who would continue the planned destruction of Israel.  And once again we sat still without protest like sheep being led to the slaughter once again.  I have asked God many times if He has placed something in the minds of us Jews that allows us to be intelligent in many ways and yet stupid in others, or how a people who have suffered the horrors of the Holocaust can once again sit still and allow someone like Sharon and Olmert lead us into yet another Holocaust?  But like you when I read the prophetic Word of God I find all my answers of what is to come and what will be. Then we sit still and allow Egypt (our peace partner) to open its border for tons of weapons moving into Gaza preparing Hamas for an all out war. To add insult to injury we allow these same Hamas terrorists to shell our cities and towns in the western Negev, causing death and destruction to our Jewish citizens and we do little to nothing about it, because Bush says we must show restraint to help his efforts in Iraq. Now Hamas has completely taken over the entire Gaza Strip turning it into another Taliban state living under Islamic Sharia Law.  And as everyone knew would happen all the weapons supplied by the US to Abbas in Gaza are now in the hands of those who have sworn to destroy Israel and kill every Jew. And the weapons continue to flow into Gaza in preparation for all out war. The world is now being told that the good news is Abbas can now be dealt with in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) that he is a moderate terrorists.  When it has only been a few weeks ago when he made the statement that both Hamas and Fatah should be turning their guns on Israel and not on each other.  The fact that he is a Holocaust denier and sworn enemy of Israel seems to be forgotten.  Or is it that everyone has forgotten that Fatah is a terrorist organization, and the PLO is headed by Abbas.  That the Aksa Martyrs Brigade has killed more Jews with suicide bombers than Hamas has and it too is under the control of Abbas and Fatah.  Or that the reason the average “Palestinian” voted for Hamas in their election was they were fed up with all the corruption in the Abbas government.  That while the average “Palestinian” lived on a $1,000 or less a year, all of the Government officials lived in mansions and drove new high dollar Mercedes with money given by the US and EU.  But now we hear Rice say we must now support Abbas and give him millions of dollars to rearm his terrorists with.  Front Page Jerusalem Post today says, “US RESUMES FINANCIAL AND POLITICAL TIES WITH PA. It’s not enough that because of the Bush pressure on Sharon we now have a Taliban State on our southern borders that has sworn to destroy the State of Israel and kill every Jew, he wants to now finish the job and turn the heart land of Israel into a terrorist state as well, and his spin doctors are very quick to start their propaganda to the whole world. We now have Barak back as our Defense Minister with his eye squarely on the Prime Ministers job; we all know that he will give it all to the Arabs even the Old City and the Temple Mount.  We now have Shimon Peres the epitome of total evil as our next President. While Netanyahu who so many believe to be the best man for the job of PM sits still with his mouth shut and seems to have no fight left in him.  So to say things look bad here in Israel would be a very fair statement. As terrible as the above may seem it is pale in comparison to what Iran and Syria has in store for Israel.  For months now Iran has been shipping convoys of weapons into Lebanon to rearm Hezbollah with longer range missiles under the ever watchful eye of the UN.  Russia, North Korea and China have been arming Syria with Iranian financial backing. And Iran has hundreds of long range missile aimed at Israel of which anyone of them could be carrying a nuclear warhead purchased from any number of the old USSR countries. While Egypt sits unnoticed allowing Hamas in Gaza to rearm and they too have a very large and dangerous army thanks to the US.  Egypt has a long memory and they want revenge for 1967 and 1973 wars. All this only means that if Israel just sits here and waits it will be destroyed or nearly destroyed and only God can then save her.  But then that sounds Scriptural doesn’t it! But don’t think it is only Israel that will be destroyed, the United States is the main target and with Israel out of the way look out USA the terrorists cells in the US will begin their planned destruction of that country as well.  In the meantime God is showing the US His displeasure of the back stabbing that the US is doing to Israel.  Anyone with eyes to see can look around the US and see the hand of God working to prove His Word Gen. 12:3. But God has other plans for Israel, for this is where the Messiah left from and this will be the place of His return.  There are many Scriptures to be fulfilled and all of them could happen very quickly.  God has called this Ministry to rescue Jews and we will with the help of those God has touched to join with us, and they too will be blessed by God. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, for our son Joel and all the IDF soldiers.  Pray for this Ministry and your part in it.  Shalom, jerry golden
• Christians warned: Accept Islamic law WorldNetDaily (June 19, 2007) - Christians can continue living safely in the Gaza Strip only if they accept Islamic law, including a ban on alcohol and on women roaming publicly without proper head coverings, an Islamist militant leader in Gaza told WND in an exclusive interview. The militant leader said Christians in Gaza who engage in "missionary activity" will be "dealt with harshly." The threats come two days after a church and Christian school in Gaza was attacked following the seizure of power in the territory by the Hamas terror group. "I expect our Christian neighbors to understand the new Hamas rule means real changes. They must be ready for Islamic rule if they want to live in peace in Gaza," said Sheik Abu Saqer, leader of Jihadia Salafiya, an Islamic outreach movement that recently announced the opening of a "military wing" to enforce Muslim law in Gaza. Jihadia Salafiya is suspected of attacking a United Nations school in Gaza last month, after the school allowed boys and girls to participate in the same sporting event. One person was killed in that attack. "The situation has now changed 180 degrees in Gaza," said Abu Saqer, speaking from Gaza yesterday. "Jihadia Salafiya and other Islamic movements will ensure Christian schools and institutions show publicly what they are teaching to be sure they are not carrying out missionary activity. No more alcohol on the streets. All women, including non-Muslims, need to understand they must be covered at all times while in public," Abu Asqer told WND. "Also the activities of Internet cafes, pool halls and bars must be stopped," he said. "If it goes on, we'll attack these things very harshly." Abu Saqer accused the leadership of the Gaza Christian community of "proselytizing and trying to convert Muslims with funding from American evangelicals." "This missionary activity is endangering the entire Christian community in Gaza," he said. Abu Saqer claimed there was "no need" for the thousands of Christians in Gaza to maintain a large number of institutions in the territory. About 2,000 Christians live in the Gaza Strip, which has a population of over 1 million. Abu Saqer said Hamas "must work to impose an Islamic rule or it will lose the authority it has and the will of the people." His comments come after gunmen Sunday attacked Gaza's Latin Church and adjacent Rosary Sisters School, reportedly destroying crosses, bibles, pictures of Jesus and furniture and equipment. • "Raw" Almonds Must be Heated or Treated with Toxic Chemical Bioneers (June 18, 2007) - The following is a news release from Cornucopia institute CORNUCOPIA, WI: Small-scale farmers, retailers, and consumers are outraged over a new federal regulation that will require all almonds grown in California to be sterilized with various “pasteurization” techniques. The rule, which the USDA quietly developed in response to outbreaks of Salmonella in 2001 and 2004, traced to raw almonds, mandates that all almonds undergo a sterilization process that includes chemical and/or high-temperature treatments. Although the final rule was just published in the Federal Register, The Cornucopia Institute, a Wisconsin-based farm policy research group, is asking the USDA to reopen the proceeding for public comment. Cornucopia contends that the rule was never effectively announced to the public, and that the reasoning behind both the necessity and safety of the sterilization processes should be questioned before the rule goes into effect this September. “The new rule is unwarranted and could have many harmful impacts," said Mark Kastel, senior farm policy analyst at Cornucopia. “The costs of the chemical and heat treatments, in addition to the costs of transporting and recording the new procedures, will be especially onerous on small-scale and organic farmers, and could force many out of business.” The only exemption to these new regulations will be organic “raw” almonds that will not be fumigated, but will undergo the steam-heat treatment, and small-scale growers who can sell truly raw almonds but only direct to the public from farm stands. Although foodborne illnesses have garnered headlines in recent years, including contamination of California-grown spinach and lettuce, raw produce and nuts are not inherently risky foods. Contamination occurs when livestock manure or fecal matter is inadvertently transferred to food through contaminated water, soil, or transportation and handling equipment. Raw foods can also be infected by poor employee sanitation either on the farm or in processing facilities. In an exclusive article, the paper claimed that Assad's motive was his anger at the Arab League foreign ministers' positions during last week's Cairo summit, particularly the stances of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, who called for an end to Syrian involvement in Lebanon. • Turkey: Ruling Islamic-Rooted Party Will Win Elections, Survey Shows ADN Kronos International (June 18, 2007) - Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) will score a clear victory in elections scheduled for 22 July, results of a poll published Monday suggest. However the survey conducted by the KONDA research agency for Raymond James Brokerage, also indicated the AKP total number of seats in parliament would fall to 307 from 352, still handing it a strong majority to form a government in the 550 seat house. The poll also indicated that the centre-left Republican People's Party (CHP) and the ultra nationalist Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) will win enough votes to to pass the 10 percent national treshold required to enter parliament. It also showed that some 40 candidates running as independents - and thus exempt from the 10 percent national threshold rule - stand a good chance of being elected. Many of these are ethnic Kurdish candidates, including several former members of the Democratic Soiceity Party (DTP) which has been banned by authorities who accused it of ties with Kurdish separatists. In a separate poll conducted by the Turkish magazine Ekonomist magazine amongst 375 top members of the business world, the AKP scored a preference of 32,6 percent, which again if translated in amount of votes in the election, would allow Erdogan's party to form a government alone. Among those polled by Ekonomist, around one quarter (25,4) percent wanted to see an all-AKP government, which they favoured for its perceived market friendly policies. • Turkey’s military to military ties with Russia growing Turkish Weekly (June 18, 2007) - Military relations between Turkey and Russia have been growing as Turkish Air Forces Commander Gen. Faruk Cömert, in what is said to be the first visit by a Turkish Air Forces commander to this country since the establishment of diplomatic relations 87 years ago, returned home last Friday with the decision to set up a hot line between the two countries' air force commanders. Cömert was reciprocating the visit of the then Russian air force commander to Turkey in 2004. But both Turkish and Russian diplomatic and military sources ruled out that the growing trust between the militaries of both countries, reflected in the increased high-level military visits by top commanders, should be interpreted as part of an alleged growing tendency within the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to liken itself to the rather tough Russian military. "Russia does not think that Turkey's acting like the bad boy of NATO will serve Russia's interests. On the contrary, Moscow has been seeking good relations with NATO and a good NATO ally like Turkey will serve and currently serves the Russian interest. For example, it was through Turkish intervention that Russia participated in this year's European and NATO navy commanders' meeting, held once a year," said a Russian military analyst in Moscow to Today's Zaman in a telephone interview. "While some might see it as a matter better left to parents, the negative influence of religion and its subsequent contribution to child abuse from religious beliefs and practices requires us to ask whether organized religion is an institution that needs limits set on how early it should have access to children." • Curious Triangle: Maurice Strong, Paul Martin & Javier Solana NewsWithViews (June 17, 2007) - In March of 1995, there was a near shooting war at high sea between Spain and Canada. Javier Solana was close to beginning his 6 month dual coinciding presidency terms as president of both the 10 nation Western European Union, a military federation and the EU itself. He had BIG plans that would definitely need Morocco's cooperation. Solana's larger agenda included the Barcelona Process. It would be opened by a "Barcelona Conference" scheduled to take place in Barcelona, Spain on November 27, 1995. It was to be a federation of 27 Mediterranean basin nations. He wanted it to: (1) Battle religious fundamentalism, worldwide; (2) Mutually advantageous trading terms over the area's resources leading to a Mediterranean Free Trade Zone by 2010; (3) Get the USA out of the Mediterranean and/or greatly reduce its presence there. Morocco was to pose a little problem and Solana was working to solve it. Historically there has been little or no love lost between Spain and Morocco. Solana could not put the Barcelona Process together and sell it to the Arab population countries without Moroccan support or at least lack of opposition. Morocco demanded concessions. Solana who enjoyed extraordinary powers for a mere cabinet official in Spain (he being the official spokesman for the country for many years) negotiated and gave Morocco what they sought. What they sought was (1) the ability to sell their produce in Europe. Although the concession deeply impacted the produce growing economy of the European Mediterranean and southern Atlantic countries of France, Greece, Portugal and Spain, this was granted. Next, Morocco demanded that Spanish fishermen stop fishing off her coastline. This was granted and the Spanish fishermen were ordered home. It was March of 1995. Six hundred unemployed Spanish fishing trawlers with their owners and crews were sitting angrily unemployed in the Spanish harbors. It was suggested to them that they could and should "go fish Canada." They went to Canada's Newfoundland waters and fished the cod, halibut, and turbot fishing stocks nearly to extinction. Canadian correspondents tell me the stocks have never fully recovered. Canada, of course, was not happy about this. I was told by former American ambassador to Canada, former Michigan governor James Blanchard, that the United States at that time assisted Canada in detecting that the Spaniards were fishing using illegal methods. Blanchard confided in me that electronic devices had been employed in making this determination. Nothing much was done, however, until a Spanish trawler, the Estai, crossed the boundary from international waters into Canadian waters. When this occurred, Canadian authorities boarded the ship and took both ship and crew into custody. At this point, Javier Solana leaped into action. He promptly dispatched three Spanish warships against Canada. Various scholars have worked in an intellectual vein to understand the event in terms of international law. • BBC network admits it: We're biased toward left WorldNetDaily (June 17, 2007) - The BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, has acknowledged the network is biased toward the left, following a report commissioned by the company. A yearlong probe revealed the corporation especially partial in its treatment of single-issue politics such as climate change, poverty, race and religion, according to the London Times. "It concludes that the bias has extended across drama, comedy and entertainment, with the corporation pandering to politically motivated celebrities and trendy causes," the paper said. The report cites the danger of BBC programs being undermined by the liberal culture of its staff, who need to challenge their own assumptions more. "There is a tendency to 'group think' with too many staff inhabiting a shared space and comfort zone," says the report. It notes staff tend to mimic each other's common left-leaning values. A seminar on staff impartiality held last year is documented, with officials admitting they would broadcast images of the Bible being thrown away, but not the Koran for fear of offending Muslims. The report also warns that celebrities must not be pandered to and allowed to hijack the BBC schedule, according to the London Telegraph. It also offers 12 new principles for the corporation to adopt to safeguard objectivity, including: "Impartiality is no excuse for insipid programming. It allows room for fair-minded, evidence-based judgments by senior journalists and documentary-makers, and for controversial, passionate and polemical arguments by contributors and writers." A BBC spokeswoman said: "This report is about looking forward and how we are going to face the challenges of impartiality in the modern world." As WND reported in October, an internal BBC memo revealed senior figures admitted the national news agency was guilty of promoting left-wing views and anti-Christian sentiment. The admissions of bias were made at the impartiality summit. Most executives admitted the corporation's representation of homosexuals and ethnic minorities was unbalanced and disproportionate.
• Rockets fired at Israel from Lebanon Associated Press (June 17, 2007) - Militants in Lebanon fired at least two rockets into Israel on Sunday, causing no casualties and little damage, but raising the possibility of a new flare-up on the volatile border less than a year after Israel's bloody monthlong war against Hezbollah. The Lebanese prime minister said the attack was geared at undermining the stability of Lebanon, while the U.N. condemned Sunday's incident as a serious violation to a cease-fire that ended the conflict last year. Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, denied involvement, and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert it was mostly likely the work of "a small Palestinian movement." Israel's initial reaction was muted, but security officials were meeting to debate a response. "We are still clarifying the circumstances," Olmert said in New York, where he was meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "Lebanon has been very quiet in the last nine months and hopefully will continue to be so." The rockets were the first fired from Lebanon since last summer's war, when almost 4,000 rockets exploded in Israel. The latest rockets landed in the northern town of Kiryat Shemona, which was hard hit during that conflict. An official with Olmert indicated Israel would not hit back. • Police smash global pedophile ring Associated Press (June 17, 2007) - British police, aided by U.S. authorities, have smashed a global Internet pedophile ring that broadcast live-streamed videos of children being abused, investigating more than 700 suspects worldwide and rescuing 31 children in a 10-month probe, officials said Monday. Some 200 suspects are based in Britain, said the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center, a government agency. Of the 31 children, some only a few months old, more than 15 were in Britain, the center said. British authorities would not give a breakdown of where the other suspects or children came from, but said more than half the suspects in Britain were already being prosecuted. The ring was traced to an Internet chat room called "Kids the Light of Our Lives" that featured images of children being subjected to horrific sexual abuse, including the streaming live videos. Authorities said they used surveillance tactics normally used against terrorism suspects and drug traffickers to infiltrate the pedophile ring at its highest level. Officials said the United States, Canada and Australia were Britain's main partners in the investigation, which involved agencies from 35 countries. The international investigation dated back to August 2006 until the ringleader's sentencing Monday. The international probe began after Canadian officials — conducting their own long-running pedophile investigation — tipped off authorities in London about a possible British link. A Canadian official said authorities there have arrested 24 Canadians and rescued seven Canadian children since late 2005. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement joined the British-led operation in December. U.S. officials declined to comment because their investigation is continuing in at least 12 states. • British body backs inter-species clones Reuters (June 16, 2007) - Making human-animal embryos for scientific experiments should be allowed because of the benefits to science and medicine, British experts said in a report released for Sunday. Such embryos should never, however, be implanted into either a woman or an animal, said the Academy of Medical Sciences. The combinations would include animal eggs and the nucleus, containing the genetic material, of a human being, or human embryos that carry the genetic material of an animal, the independent advisory body said. A cloning technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer, or SCNT for short, involves removing the nucleus from an egg cell and replacing it with the nucleus of a cell from the animal to be cloned -- perhaps a skin cell, for instance. Scientists have tried this using, for example, an egg cell from a cow and a human nucleus. There are no laws against it in either Britain or the United states and the independent Academy said it should remain legal. "Provided good laboratory practice is rigorously followed, research involving cytoplasmic hybrids or other inter-species embryos offers no significant safety risks over and above regular cell culture research," said Martin Bobrow of Britain's Wellcome Trust, who chaired the panel making the recommendations. more...
• China Arming Terrorists The Washington Times (June 15, 2007) - New intelligence reveals China is covertly supplying large quantities of small arms and weapons to insurgents in Iraq and the Taliban militia in Afghanistan, through Iran. U.S. government appeals to China to check some of the arms shipments in advance were met with stonewalling by Beijing, which insisted it knew nothing about the shipments and asked for additional intelligence on the transfers. The ploy has been used in the past by China to hide its arms-proliferation activities from the United States, according to U.S. officials with access to the intelligence reports. Some arms were sent by aircraft directly from Chinese factories to Afghanistan and included large-caliber sniper rifles, millions of rounds of ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades and components for roadside bombs, as well as other small arms. The Washington Times reported June 5 that Chinese-made HN-5 anti-aircraft missiles were being used by the Taliban. According to the officials, the Iranians, in buying the arms, asked Chinese state-run suppliers to expedite the transfers and to remove serial numbers to prevent tracing their origin. China, for its part, offered to transport the weapons in order to prevent the weapons from being interdicted. The weapons were described as "late-model" arms that have not been seen in the field before and were not left over from Saddam Hussein's rule in Iraq. U.S. Army specialists suspect the weapons were transferred within the past three months. The Bush administration has been trying to hide or downplay the intelligence reports to protect its pro-business policies toward China, and to continue to claim that China is helping the United States in the war on terrorism. U.S. officials have openly criticized Iran for the arms transfers but so far there has been no mention that China is a main supplier. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Wednesday that the flow of Iranian arms to Afghanistan is "fairly substantial" and that it is likely taking place with the help of the Iranian government. Defense officials are upset that Chinese weapons are being used to kill Americans. • Solana defends EU military planning hub EU Observer (June 14, 2007) - As the new EU military operations centre conducts its first exercise with a virtual deployment of 2,000 European soldiers, the bloc's foreign policy chief Javier Solana played down criticism that the new body duplicates the role of NATO's headquarters. "It's a question of a good and serious division of labour, which is necessary with the number of crises we are trying to handle," Mr Solana told journalists on Wednesday (14 June), AP reported. He rejected the suggestion that the centre - set up earlier this year in Brussels to enable the bloc to plan and run an autonomous operation at the military strategic level - could be seen as competition undermining links with the North Atlantic pact. Such criticism has been recently voiced by UK conservative MEP Geoffrey Van Orden MEP, who argued that the military operations centre is a revival of the idea of a separate EU operational planning staff proposed by four states (France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg) in 2003 and rejected by the UK. "The reasons to oppose such a move [in 2003] were clear - the EU would be duplicating vital functions at the very heart of NATO, would weaken enthusiasm for NATO-led operations, and ultimately would displace the role of NATO's military planners," Mr van Orden said. The British deputy added that originally a small EU operational staff based at NATO has now turned into "the full works" in the form of the new body, with "the fig leaf that the EU is merely helping NATO and has only limited defence ambitions" increasingly exposed. • Solar Tornadoes Thunderbolts.info (June 14, 2007) - As Fred Hoyle long ago pointed out; the Sun does not conform to the expected behavior of an internally heated ball of gas, simply radiating its energy into space. Instead, its behavior at every level is complex and baffling. Nowhere is it more mysterious than in a sunspot. Sunspots are strange blemishes on the face of the Sun that offer some of the strongest evidence against the Sun being powered internally. They are conventionally described as being a result of strong magnetic fields pinching off the convection of heat from inside the Sun before it can reach the surface. The electric star interpretation is that sunspots are breaks in the hot surface of the sun, through which we can get a glimpse of the underlying layers. To satisfy the standard theory, these deeper layers of the Sun should be hotter to drive the so-called vigorous convection. But they aren't. The dark center of the sunspot, or umbra, is 20% cooler than the rest of the surface of the Sun. The outer shadow of the sunspot, or penumbra, and the structure and behavior of the filaments that form the penumbra are also too complex to be explained by standard stellar theory. There is a temptation for plasma researchers to simply equate the penumbral filaments with gargantuan lightning bolts, but the features do not match all that well. A typical lightning flash lasts for 0.2 seconds and covers a distance of about 10 km. The penumbral filaments last for at least one hour and are of the order of 1000 km long. If we could scale a lightning bolt 100 times we might have a flash that lasted between 20 and 200 seconds and was 1000 km long. The lifetime is too short. Also, measurements of scars on lightning conductors show that the lightning channel is only about 5 mm wide. Scaling that by 100 times would have solar lightning channels far below the limit of telescopic resolution. However, there is another familiar form of atmospheric electric discharge that does scale appropriately and could explain the mysterious dark cores of penumbral filaments. It is the tornado! Tornadoes last for minutes and can have a diameter of the order of one kilometer. Scale those figures up 100 times and we match penumbral filaments very well. And if the circulating cylinder of plasma is radiating heat and light, as we see on the Sun, then the solar "tornado" will appear, side on, to have bright edges and a dark core (right image, above). more...

It was announced the morning of Wednesday, June 13, 2007, by economic writers Steven Pearlstein and Robert Samuelson in the pages of the Washington Post, one of the foremost house organs of the U.S. monetary elite. Pearlstein’s column was titled, “The Takeover Boom, About to Go Bust” and concerned the extraordinary amount of debt vs. operating profits of companies currently subject to leveraged buyouts. In language remarkably alarmist for the usually ultra-bland pages of the Post, Pearlstein wrote, “It is impossible to predict when the magic moment will be reached and everyone finally realizes that the prices being paid for these companies, and the debt taken on to support the acquisitions, are unsustainable. When that happens, it won't be pretty. Across the board, stock prices and company valuations will fall. Banks will announce painful write-offs, some hedge funds will close their doors, and private-equity funds will report disappointing returns. Some companies will be forced into bankruptcy or restructuring.” Further, “Falling stock prices will cause companies to reduce their hiring and capital spending while governments will be forced to raise taxes or reduce services, as revenue from capital gains taxes declines. And the combination of reduced wealth and higher interest rates will finally cause consumers to pull back on their debt-financed consumption. It happened after the junk-bond and savings-and-loan collapses of the late 1980s. It happened after the tech and telecom bust of the late '90s. And it will happen this time.” Samuelson’s column, “The End of Cheap Credit,” left the door slightly ajar in case the collapse is not quite so severe. He wrote of rising interest rates, “As the price of money increases, borrowing and the economy might weaken. The deep slump in housing could worsen. We could also discover that the long period of cheap credit has left a nasty residue.” Other writers with less prestigious platforms than the Post have been talking about an approaching financial bust for a couple of years. Among them has been economist Michael Hudson, author of an article on the housing bubble titled, “The New Road to Serfdom” in the May 2006 issue of Harper’s. Hudson has been speaking in interviews of a “break in the chain” of debt payments leading to a “long, slow economic crash,” with “asset deflation,” “mass defaults on mortgages,” and a “huge asset grab” by the rich who are able to protect their cash through money laundering and hedging with foreign currency bonds. Among those poised to profit from the crash is the Carlyle Group, the equity fund that includes the Bush family and other high-profile investors with insider government connections. A January 2007 memorandum to company managers from founding partner William E. • EU Constitution 'Can Be Simple' BBC News (June 14, 2007) - An EU summit next week may agree to re-name the European constitution and re-package it as a simple treaty, a report by German officials suggests. But the report, seen by the BBC, says this "major concession" will only be made if the "substance" of the original deal is preserved. Germany will be chairing the summit in Brussels, which may agree the outline of a treaty replacing the constitution. BBC Europe editor Mark Mardell says the report poses some problems for the UK. He says several areas would be difficult for British leaders to sell to the British public without a referendum. The constitution was signed by EU member states in 2004, but was rejected by French and Dutch voters in referendums in 2005. British, French and Dutch politicians have argued that the treaty must be simplified to prevent the need for further referendums. It has not been general practice, in most member states, to put routine amendments of EU treaties to a public vote. The German proposals are also likely to be unwelcome in Poland, because they say nothing about changing the voting system at meetings of the 27 governments. Poland has threatened to block the new constitution, unless its demands are met, but is coming under intense pressure to drop its objections. French President Nicolas Sarkozy held talks with his Polish counterpart, Lech Kaczynski, on Thursday, and Mr Kaczynski is due to travel to Germany for a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday. The case originated five years ago in Oakland, Calif., during his tenure there as city manager. The dispute began in January 2003, when the two Oakland employees created a subgroup at their workplace called the "Good News Employee Association." It was partly in response to a group of homosexual employees having formed their own group 10 months before and being given access to the city e-mail system. One e-mail, dated Oct. 11, 2002, invited city employees to participate in "National Coming-Out Day." When several employees asked whether such a posting was legitimate city business, they got an e-mail from City Council member Danny Wan, reminding them that a "celebration of the gay/lesbian culture and movement" was part of the city's role to "celebrate diversity." In response, the Good News employees posted an introductory flier on the employee bulletin board Jan. 3. It said: "Preserve Our Workplace With Integrity: Good News Employee Association is a forum for people of faith to express their views on the contemporary issues of the day." It said it opposed "all views which seek to redefine the natural family and marriage," which it defined as "a union of a man and a woman, according to California state law." Anyone who wanted to help preserve "integrity in the workplace" was invited to contact the two employees: Regina Rederford and Robin Christy. A lesbian co-worker, Judith Jennings, spotted the flier and complained to the city attorney's office that it made her feel "targeted" and "excluded," according to a deposition. • Driver ticketed for using biofuel The News & Observer (June 11, 2007) - Bob Teixeira decided it was time to take a stand against U.S. dependence on foreign oil. So last fall the Charlotte musician and guitar instructor spent $1,200 to convert his 1981 diesel Mercedes to run on vegetable oil. He bought soybean oil in 5-gallon jugs at Costco, spending about 30 percent more than diesel would cost. His reward, from a state that heavily promotes alternative fuels: a $1,000 fine last month for not paying motor fuel taxes. He has been told to expect another $1,000 fine from the federal government. To legally use veggie oil, state officials told him, he would have to first post a $2,500 bond. Teixeira is one of a growing number of fuel-it-yourselfers -- backyard brewers who recycle restaurant grease or make moonshine for their car tanks. They do it to save money, reduce pollution or thumb their noses at oil sheiks. They're also caught in a web of little-known state laws that can stifle energy independence. State Sen. Stan Bingham, R-Denton, is known around Raleigh for his diesel Volkswagen fueled by used soybean oil. The car sports a "Goodbye, OPEC" sign. "If somebody was going to go to this much trouble to drive around in a car that uses soybean oil, they ought to be exempt" from state taxes, he said. The state Department of Revenue, which fined Teixeira, has asked legislators to waive the $2,500 bond for small fuel users. The department also told Teixeira, after the Observer asked about his case this week, that it will compromise on his fine. But officials say they'll keep pursuing taxes on all fuels used in highway vehicles. With its 29.9-cent a gallon gas tax, the state collects $1.2 billion each year to pay for road construction. "With the high cost of fuel right now, the department does recognize that a lot of people are looking for relief," said Reggie Little, assistant director of the motor fuel taxes division. • President Bush's New World Order Legacy Accuracy in Media (June 1, 2007) - With his record of defending American borders and national sovereignty in ruins, President Bush has decided to conclude his second term in office by making common cause with those who think America's future lies in appeasing the "international community." He apparently wants his "legacy" to be that he cared for the rest of the world. Watch your wallets―and your freedom. The latest phase of this "legacy building" campaign began with a plea on Wednesday for more money to fight AIDS. This provided a photo opportunity for the President to pose with a black child. So far, about $200 billion has been spent by the federal government on AIDS, without any cure or vaccine being developed. But it looks "compassionate" to throw money at the problem. Tens of billions are now being spent, some of it provided by agreements brokered through Bill Clinton's foundation, to fight AIDS with potentially toxic and lethal drugs. On the eve of the G-8 meeting of major industrialized nations in Germany, Bush gave a global warming speech on Thursday at an event hosted by the U.S. Global Leadership Campaign. This is a coalition of business and non-government organizations that includes the pro-world government Citizens for Global Solutions, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Ted Turner's U.N. Foundation, Planned Parenthood, the American Friends Service Committee, the Alliance for a Global Community, and the United Nations Association. It looks like Bush is abandoning what's left of his conservative base before they abandon him. Bush told the group, "This is a fine organization and it's an important organization. It's rallying businesses and non-governmental organizations and faith-based and community and civic organizations across our country to advance a noble cause, ensuring that the United States leads the world in spreading hope and opportunity." Another part of this "legacy building" is his decision to seek ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), a dangerous document that transfers control of the oceans and much of the land area of the world as well to a U.N. bureaucracy. It finances its activities with a global tax. The pact is endorsed by some of the same groups and individuals involved in the Global Leadership Campaign. UNCLOS charges American corporations a "fee" for exploiting ocean resources for the benefit of America and threatens these same corporations with global climate change litigation before an international court if they "pollute" the oceans from anywhere on the face of the earth. U.S. Navy support for UNCLOS masks the sharp decline in U.S. Naval forces. The number of U.S. ships has declined under Bush to 276, from a high of 594 under President Reagan, who rejected UNCLOS.
