Poll: Most Egyptians want peace treaty with Israel canceled

The Jerusalem Post (Link) (April 26, 2011)

Over half of all Egyptians would like to see the Egypt-Israel peace treaty canceled, reported AP on Monday quoting results of a poll conducted by the US-based Pew Research Center.

The poll shows how unpopular the three-decade-old treaty is among Egyptians, and also shows that most Egyptians are optimistic about where the country is going after the ousting of former president Hosni Mubarak.

However, the emergence of a more democratic system in Egypt could threaten relations with Israel, AP reported, citing the poll which shows 54 percent of Egyptians would like to see the treaty annulled.

Despite decades of peace between the neighboring countries, AP reported that most Egyptians view the Israelis in a negative light, mainly due to perceptions that Israel mistreats the Palestinians.
